Got High Cholesterol? Common Sense Ways To Lower Your Cholesterol ...

"National Cholesterol Awareness Month"

It's seems to be in the news everywhere, high cholesterol is a BIG problem for increasing numbers of people around the world. This article will provide you with some easy steps you can take RIGHT NOW to improve your diet, and hopefully reduce your cholesterol level if it is too high. Remember though, you should always consult your doctor before making any major changes to your diet.

Of course, the first thing you need to do is to have regular physical examinations by your family physician. Your doctor will be able to tell you whether your cholesterol level is high or whether you have any of the other risk factors associated with heart disease. When you do find out your cholesterol, write it down, and keep a record every time you do have it measured.

You have probably heard that the major culprits that contribute to high cholesterol are foods that contain saturated fats and cholesterol itself. Reducing these is one way you can make major improvements in your diet.

You will need to do three important things:

  1. Stop eating (or reduce the amount of) foods high in saturated fats and cholesterol. The best way to do this is to read the labels on food packages.
  2. Start eating foods with healthy fats such as fish, olive oil, and many others.
  3. Increase your physical activity (this also helps lower cholesterol and increase the "good" cholesterol).

Reducing Cholesterol In Your Diet

Here are some simple tactics that can help you to reduce the amount of cholesterol in your diet:

  • Do a "clean sweep" of your kitchen. Enlist your family and friends and go through all of the foods in your kitchen and get rid of anything with high saturated fats and cholesterol.
  • Go on a "Fat-Free Shopping Spree"! Find a nice grocery store that has good fruits and veggies and load up on them. Check out the health food section and try a different low fat item each week.
  • Try low fat frozen meals such as "Lean Cuisine". These have the added benefits of reducing portion size.
  • Find some low-fat snacks that you enjoy. There are many new reduced fat popcorns available now in "min-bag" size.
  • Become a "Fruit and Veggie Fanatic". Eat lots and lots of fresh fruits, veggies and whole grain products. These are low-fat and they also provide essential vitamins to keep you healthy.

Important: Please remember to always follow your doctor's advice. You may need to take a cholesterol-lowering medication even if you do eat a low-fat diet.
